St Patrick's Day in MoscowGreen Patrick in Moscow
A Russian view on the Irish national holiday. When all Russian celebrations are behind and May holidays are still far away, one may loose his festive mood. But, as Maria Chelnokova reports, smart admirers of Irish culture have found the way to solve this problem: Moscow has established Saint Patrick's Day celebrations on a rather large scale in the middle of March. As Maria says: "During the whole bright history of foreign celebrations that settled down in Russia there was never such sensation like that. Saint Patrick's Day is unbelievably popular among our compatriots."

Harrie Franken - a major Dutch folk music figure
Traditional music from the Netherlands Part VI. FolkWorld's Eelco Schilder considers Harrie Franken to have been of major importance to traditional music in the southern part of the Netherlands. Unfortunately, Harrie died last year, which is a great loss to Dutch folk music. The Dutch folk magazine Newfolksounds published last February a stroy about Harrie Franken's work, and Eelco could convince the magazine and the author of the article to be allowed to translate the article, as part of FolkWorld's Dutch folk music series.

Of the Gallows Literature of the Streets
Excerpts from Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor (1861). Ballads on a Subject are always on a political, criminal, or exciting public event, or one that has interested the public. After any great event, a ballad on the subject is often enough written, printed, and sung in the street, in little more than an hour. The broad-sheet known in street-sale is an unfolded sheet, varying in size, and printed on one side...

Salsa Celtica, the Scottish band with the unique concept of blending Salsa with Scottish traditional music, have been this spring on an extensive "village halls to city halls tour". One of their stops in East Anglia was the Colchester Arts Centre, where the band appeared as part of the centre's Salsa programme. Michael Moll went to see the Scottish folk/world music sensation.

TERrA POLSKA - Ein Ausblick

Besser: The Blues ain't nothing but a good man feeling bad."
