Henk Scholte and Törf - traditional music from the Netherlands
Traditional music in the Netherlands Series, part IV. Törf's recent CD Beukema is, according to the latest edition of the Rough Guide for World Music, the best Dutch roots album made so far. Apart from being Törf's singer, Henk Scholte has a very successful radio show in Groningen and also works for the house of culture in the same district. With great enthusiasm, Henk told Eelco Schilder about his "musical" life filled with music and his vision on the group Törf.

Tønder 2003 - Some of the best folk music around packed into four days
The 29th Tønder Festival was a marathon of music, with a wide variety of quality acts and happenings, on and off the stage. In a festival which values old friendships and returning artists, over half of the 39 acts at this years festival had never performed at the Tønder before. The most noticeable themes this year were the predominance of high energy Scottish bands and rapidly maturing Danish bands, as well as several acts which showed a mastery of showmanship and stagecraft. There were also a number of pleasant surprises for the audience and unwelcome surprises for the organizers.

Folkwoods Festival 2003 - A hot weekend in the woods
The summer 2003 has been a exceptional hot affair in central Europe. Many long time temperature maximums have been topped. The Folkwoods weekend in august was no exception. The temperature was nearly too hot to attend a festival... But a lot of folks found their way into the woods near Eindhoven to have an great weekend.

Street-Sellers, Chaunters and Minstrels
Excerpts from Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor (1861). The summer of 1849 saw a serious outbreak of cholera in London, 13,000 people dying from the disease within three months. Henry Mayhew (1812-87) suggested to the Morning Chronicle newspaper to carry out an investigation into the condition of the labouring classes, which was published in a series of 82 articles and later in volume form as London Labour and the London Poor. Tom Keller has compiled some hof Henry's notes.

New smiling shoes in La Bottine Souriante
No longer the best band in the world? As one of the old established bands of the Canadian folk music scene, La Bottine Souriante became internationally famous when they added some 10 years ago a brass section to their up to then more typical folk band line-up. Since then, they have often been described as the best live band in the world. Hardly noticed by the press (and not even properly announced on the La Bottine Souriante website), this wonderful band has gone through a major line-up change. One of their first gigs in the new line-up was at the Sidmouth International Festival this August. FolkWorld was there to report.

Folk at Fram 2003
With Kirsty McGee, Maire Ni Chathasaigh & Chris Newman, Eliza Carthy Band. Another year at Folk at Fram, the one-evening folk festival in the unique surroundings in the courtyard of a medieval castle ruin in Suffolk. This year it took place at England's hottest recorded weekend, in August. When the concert and the individual picnics started, the temperature was already dropping to a comfortable level, making it a rather perfect night for it.

Snape Proms with sun glasses
Lúnasa and Kate Rusby Band playing this prestigious festival. This year's theme throughout the programme brochure of the Snape Proms were sun glasses - as if the organisers had anticipated that August 2003 would become one of the sunniest and hottest Augusts on record! Amongst the high quality choice of music of all styles, the folk element was this year representent by two Celtic top acts - Lúnasa and Kate Rusby with her impressive band.

New winds blowing from Spain: Asturian folk star Hevia builds wind instruments
Jose-Angel HEVIA is a recognised young master "gaiteru": a traditional bagpiper from the North Spanish region of Asturias (or Asturies, as the Asturians call it in their local language called Bable). Since recently he has joined a company producing quality wind instruments.

T:-)M's Night Shift - book reviews
Folk Songs and Fake Songs from the Delta to the Polka Belt and beyond. Jetzt ist die Zeit und Stunde da, daß wir ziehn nach Amerika (the hour of decision is now upon us, for us to go to America), the Hutterites sang when leaving behind persecution in the Austrian Empire for a new life in North America. 'The Hutterites are a singing people. Songs acompany all religious and secular events in the course of a year and of a lifetime,' observed Helmut Wulz. 'Hutterites sing with considerable volume, and they consciously use a nasal vocal quality that is emphasized through the slutting of intervals. To justify this style, Hutterites frequently quote the biblical enjoinment, Let us cry so that the throat breaks.'

SUFfolk & beyond VI: Cowboys, a sheep &... Flook!
International Country Music Festival in Ipswich. How come that Flook and Last Night's Fun end up playing in front of a Cowboy audience? I suppose that this has been one of the most bizarre folk events I have been so far in this county. A SUFfolk & beyond view into the Folk Roots of America Day at Suffolk Showground, June 2003.

Live in Münster.

Unerwartetes Singer/Songwriter-Treffen in Tønder
Tonder Festival, Samstag Abend, Kulturhaus.

T:-)M's Nachtwache - Buchbesprechungen

Tom Keller berichtet.
