For many years, Irish singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Ron Kavana co-managed the Sunday afternoon ceilidh at Tønder's annual folk festival. His song "Reconciliation" has been sung in Tønder ever since. Recently Ron added author and historian to his curriculum vitae, and presented his program 'Irish Ways' at Tønder's Visemøllen. The Klezzmates: The Modern Sound of Klezmer
The Polish band Klezzmates have recently issued their second CD. Their music is rooted in Klezmer music, but it is mixed with many other influences and styles including jazz and classical sounds. Their music has a very distinct style and in order to find out whether they are a real Klezmer band and to give a brief introduction to the band, I interviewed contrabassist Jarek Wilkosz, who has been part of the band since the very beginning.

Robin Laing: Burns Supper and the Water of Life
Robin Laing came back to the Mr. Pickwick Pub in Berne, Switzerland, to celebrate Robert Burns’ birthday. His usual January tour is organized around the 25th January. Robert Burns was a farmer, exciseman, poet and Scotland’s most famous bard, and Burns Night is effectively a second national day for Scotland.

Folk Music on the Silver Screen
You Ain't Heard Nothin' Yet - From the Silents to the Talkies: Music and film are siblings which cannot be separated. There is only a handful of movies that have no music at all. Music creates a certain mood, it builts up suspense and it increases the impact of images. Besides the big orchestral scores, folk songs and traditional dance music allude to particular eras and localities. Believe it or not, the story of Folk Music on the Silver Screen already began in the infancy of moving pictures - when the world was black-and-white and silent.

SonDeSeu: Sound from Heaven
Imagine a forty five musicians orchestra, with a section for string instruments such as Celtic harps and hurdy gurdies, and a woodwinds section with bagpipes and traverse flutes. This is SonDeSeu, performing since 2004 in the city of Vigo in the province of Pontevedra, Galicia, North West Spain. Musicians from top Galician folk bands have promoted this project.

Ewan MacColl, Andy Irvine, Richard Seaman, Iowa. MacColl adopted his characteristic on-stage-posture - sitting up straight on a back-to-front chair, elbows resting on the chair back, occasionaly cupping one ear with the palm of his hand to bring his voice closer and block out surrounding noise. Peggy sat a few feet to his left, instruments beside her. From a pool of light in the shadowed stage, they worked through twenty-six songs they joined in for one another's choruses, some they sang together. Never be forgotten: Ewan MacColl (1915-89).

Israels Kultur ist untrennbar verbunden mit der Jüdischen Kultur. Der am 1948 gegründete Staat Israel ist aufgrund seiner jüdischen Bevölkerungsmehrheit wesentlich von diesen deutlich älteren kulturellen Traditionen geprägt. Eine große Rolle spielt die Musik.

Jüdische Musik erstreckt sich über einen Zeitraum von rund 3.000 Jahren, von der biblischen Periode bis zur Gründung des Staates Israel in die Gegenwart. Der historische Faktor ist die Diaspora. Durch ihre Zerstreuung kamen die Juden in Kontakt mit einer Vielzahl regionaler musikalischer Stile, Praktiken und Ideen.

Klezmer
Klezmer ist eine aus dem aschkenasischen Judentum stammende Volksmusiktradition. Etwa um das 15. Jahrhundert entwickelten Musiker eine Tradition weltlicher jüdischer Musik. Die Klezmermusik ist durch ihre charakteristischen an die menschliche Stimme erinnernden ausdrucksstarken Melodien leicht erkennbar, sie vermag gleichsam zu lachen und zu weinen.

Erika Stucky: Suicidal Yodels
Einmal mehr hat mich das Kulturprogramm des Briger Kellertheaters magnetisch angezogen. Diesen Freitag gab die im Gomsertal aufgewachsene einheimische Jazzsängerin Erika Stucky ein Gastspiel und füllte die Reihen mit einem gemischten Publikum. Sie wurde von ihrem langjährigen Freund aus New York City Jon Sass an der Tuba und dem Salzburger Sänger und Posaunisten Sebastian Fuchsberger begleitet.

Kruzifix und Öko-Bier - zwischen diesen beiden Polen spielt sich vieles im Leben fränkischer Bürger und Bürgerinnen ab. Man sollte es nicht glauben, aber beim Bardentreffen in Nürnberg auch Konzerte im Kreuzigungshof des Heilig-Geist-Spitals.

Alle guten Dinge sind drei, sagt man. In Salzgitter mussten es erst vier werden, damit sich ein Folk-Festival wirklich etablieren konnte. Denn gut gefüllt war der zum Teil bestuhlte, aber auch mit Tischen und Stehtischen ausgestattete Pferdestall der Wasserburg in Salzgitter-Gebhardshagen als Tom Keller (Veranstalter und zugleich Mitglied von Dun Aengus) zum 4. Folk-Festival begrüßte.

Fasia Hansen, Rainald Grebe, Andy Irvine. Unsere Lieder können nicht hinter geschlossenen Vorhängen, hinter verriegelten Türen bestehen, schrieb Nazim Hikmet. Unsere Lieder müssen hinaus auf die Straßen der Vorstädte gehen. Dieses Zitat des türkischen Dichters könnte ein Leitmotiv für das Leben der Sängerin und Liedermachern Fasia Jansen gewesen sein. Es gilt eingeschränkt auch für einen modernen Volkssänger wie Rainald Grebe, ganz sicher aber für den irischen Singer-Songwriter Andy Irvine.
